It is a defence mechanism to prevent and/or to remove anything foreign or unknown into one’s body via nose.
If untreated it can lead to:
Long term condition with one having flare ups.
An infection.
If one has a runny nose for less than 12 weeks (some have mild on and/off symptoms) it is known as acute rhino sinusitis and If one has a runny or congested nose longer than 12 weeks it is known as chronic rhino sinusitis.
Cause
Dental infections
Infection (bacterial i.e. S pneumonaie, H. Influenza)
When one suffers a blocked nose the body produces a mucus in one nose to get rid of the threat (i.e. allergen, virus etc) this mucus can build up in the sinuses and cause the surrounding tissue to become hot red and swollen, pressing against nerves in the area and hence cause pain over the sinuses.
Viral sinusitis
Acute viral rhinosinusitis (common cold) — affects all age groups with nasal obstruction and/or rhinorrhoea, sneezing, sore throat and malaise, and typically lasts for five to ten days;
Acute post viral rhinosinusitis — occurs when symptoms persist for more than 10 days, but less than 12 weeks.
It may be accompanied by symptoms including facial pain/pressure, reduced sense of smell and a cough.
Symptoms
Does one have:
Loss or lack of smell and/or reduced sense of smell?
Nasal congestion (blocked nose)?
Runny nose?
Is phlegm at the back of the throat (travelling from the nose) causing catarrh, sore throat, horse voice, cough, tiredness and fever (one may have some or all of these symptoms)?
When one leans head forward, one has pain on head and nose (feeling of congestion)?

Green or yellow mucus from the nose?
High fever?
Pain radiating from jaw and mistaken for toothache [owing to the roots of the upper molars lying within or near the maxillary sinuses, which (when these sinuses are inflamed) is interpreted by the brain as coming from the nearby teeth]?
Pain at worst when moving head forward/lying down/swimming/flying (facial pain or pressure)?
Pain at worst at morning and easier throughout day?
Tender sinuses and/or hurts when touched and/or and/or pain, swelling and tenderness around the cheeks, eyes or forehead?
Bad breath (caused by the bacterial sinus infection giving off odours)?
