Quinsy

What is it?

It is a collection of pus (abscess) that develops between the tonsils and the throat and is normally caused by an infection of the tonsils (tonsillitis).

If the uvula (the tissue in the middle of mouth hole) has moved to the side or this has swollen, please see your Medical Doctor on the same day, if not possible please go to hospital
The risk of quinsy increases if one has a weak immune system or a weak immune system condition

Ibuprofen and other NSAIDs can be used under medical supervision, however Ibuprofen and other NSAIDs is not recommended in asthma or asthma type symptoms. Check with your Medical doctor/Pharmacist when one can have any type of fever reducing medication to make sure it suitable for you.

Cause

  • Tonsillitis
  • Weber glands – the gland secrete fluid to clear debris from your tonsils and surrounding area, this can build up and form an abscess.

Symptoms

  • Sudden sore throat longer (often worse on one side)?
  • Sore throat which is becoming worst usually on one side leading to difficulty in swallowing and drooling (feels like a golf ball inside your throat)?
  • High temperature greater than 38°C (100°F) or over and/or chills and sweats longer than 72 hours?
  • Headache which is on and off or a constant headache longer than 24 hours?
  • Dry cough longer than three weeks or breathing difficulties (abscess grows large enough to block airways)?
  • Swollen lymph glands and/or reoccurring mouth ulcers?
  • Ear infection (earache longer than four days) or an ear discharge?
  • Mouth infection (bad breath)?
  • Swelling around neck and face?
  • General discomfort (muscle weakness), uneasiness or ill feeling (malaise) and/or fatigue (tiredness)?
  • Irritated, depressed, anxiety and/or panic attacks?
  • Loss of voice?
  • Abdominal pain and/or are constant violently vomiting or vomiting longer than two days (one day if a child)?
