Pouchitis

What is it?

Pouchitis is an inflammation (hot, red and swelling) of the pouch that occurs when the pouch becomes irritated and inflamed.

  • A patient may have to have surgery to remove remove their large intestine and rectum because of bowel conditions.
  • A pouch is used to replace these organs that can store and eliminate stools (by connecting the ileum, or lowest part of the small intestine, to the anus to create a pouch) that can store and eliminate stools.
  • The pouch (which comes in a J,S and K shape) helps improve the patient’s quality of life by preserving the natural route of defecation, and reduces the risk of growths that could develop into cancer.

Cause

  • Celiac disease
  • Crohn’s disease
  • Ulcerative colitis
  • Familial adenomatous polyposis (FAP), a genetic (inherited) condition in which many polyps form in the colon.
  • Genetic makeup (what you inherit from your parents and family)
  • Change in bowel motions/pattern
  • Change of a immune response (or presence of certain antibodies) to the different types of bacteria  intestines is exposed to, which leads to inflammation.
  • Increased number of platelets (blood-clotting structures in the blood) after surgery
  • Inflamed and hardened bile ducts in the liver in a disease
  • Heart condition
  • Diabetes
  • Smoking

  • High temperature greater than 38°C (100°F) or over and/or chills and sweats longer than 72 hours?
  • Feel the need to pass stools?
  • Painful spasms and straining while passing little or no waste?
  • Straining during defecation?
  • Blood in the stool?
  • Incontinence (loss of control over bodily functions)?
  • Seepage of waste matter while asleep?
  • Increased frequency in night time bowel movements?
  • Abdominal pain and/or are constant violently vomiting or vomiting longer than two days (one day if a child)?
  • Discomfort in the pelvic area or lower abdomen?
  • Tailbone pain?
  • Joint pain and stiffness?
  • General discomfort (muscle weakness), uneasiness or ill feeling (malaise) and/or fatigue (tiredness)?
