Pityriasis Lichenoides

What is it?

A skin disease that causes the development of small, scaling, raised spots (papules) on the skin.

There are two forms:

Pityriasis lichenoides et varioliformis acuta

  • A mild form and last less than four weeks.

Pityriasis lichenoides chronica

  • A long term skin condition that last longer than four weeks to years , one can have episodes of the skin condition meaning  when it does eventually  clear , new spots (papules) form.

  • The condition is not contagious and is thought not to be inherited.
  • It tends to be common in males
  • Common locations include:
    • Scalp (rare)
    • Face (rare)
    • The body
    • Arms
    • Hands (rare)
    • Buttocks
    • Legs
    • Feet (rare)

Cause

Symptoms

  • Small, firm, pink and scaly papules(spots) develop slowly and have a firm shiny scale?
  • If shiny scale is peeled off, a shiny brown skin appears underneath?
  • Some spots have small blisters on top?
  • Some spots are black in colour?
  • Gradually flatten and then fade to a brown colour over a period of weeks to months?
  • New papules form as above and/or are a different stages as above?
  • Occur as groups?
  • New spots are irritable itchy when they come up?

  • Strong steroidal creams and/or immunosuppressant creams prescribed by your Medical Doctor and/or skin specialist.
