Peyronie’s disease

What is it?

Peyronie’s disease is a curve in the penis.

  • It can be sidewards, upwards or downwards and is caused by inflammation and scar tissue form along the shaft of the penis.
  • Peyronie disease can be divided into acute and chronic phases.
    • The acute phase usually lasts for the first 18-24 months and is characterised by a changing inflammatory pattern that may include penile pain, some curvature, and a penile nodule.
    • The chronic phase is characterised by a stable plaque, often with calcification, and penile angulation.
    • Erection dysfunction is associated more often with the chronic phase.
If there is no pain or problem with sexual performance, men with a slightly curved penis should not be concerned.
