What is it?

Bacterial infection of the female genital tract, then the infection travels into the cervix (entry of womb).

Cause

Symptoms

Symptoms do vary:

  • Abdominal pain and/or are constant violently vomiting or vomiting longer than two days (one day if a child)?
  • Discomfort or pain during sexual intercourse that is deep in pelvis?
  • Bleeding between periods and sex?
  • Yellow/green vaginal discharge?
  • High temperature greater than 38°C (100°F) or over and/or chills and sweats longer than 72 hours or about 38°C (100°F)?
  • Vomiting?
  • Pain in anus?

This condition can lead to:

  • Abdominal abscess (collection of collected fluid in ovaries and Fallopian tube)
    • Endometritis: Inflammation and infection of endometrium.
    • Salpingitis: Inflammation and infection of Fallopian tubes, increasing risk of ectopic pregnancy (pregnancy out of womb).
    • Parametritis: Inflammation and infection of tissue around womb.
    • Oophoritis : Inflammation and infection of ovaries.
    • Abscess: Pockets of infected fluid.
  • Recurrent episodes of Pelvic Inflammatory disease
  • Bowel obstruction
  • Depression
  • Insomnia (lack of sleep)
  • Fitz Hugh Curtis syndrome
