Paget’s Disease of Skin (Pre-Cancer)

What is it?

Paget’s disease of the skin may be found in body regions in which there is an abundance of apocrine (specialised sweat glands) glands.

  • Approximately 20-35 % of cases have been associated with bowel cancer and 4-7% with other types of cancers.
  • it is a rare slow growing patch of skin that appears similar to eczema.

Common locations include:

  • Armpits
  • Nipple area
  • Genitals
  • Anus

It is most common in person between of 50 – 60 years old.

Cause

Symptoms

Paget disease on the nipple

  • Sore, flaky and ‘eczema type’ [scaling, crusting, and/or abnormally thickened skin patches (plaques) or lesions on the nipple that may extend to adjacent areas of the areola] skin on the nipple?
  • Bleeding of nipple?
  • Leaking fluid of the nipple?
  • May have a lump or mass that may be felt (palpated) below the nipple?

Paget’s disease of armpits/genitals and/or Anus area

  • Eczema red, flaky appearance -looking patch that does not go away or improve with moisturisers and other eczema treatments?
  • Patch maybe weeping?
  • Patch maybe thick and with white raised areas?
  • Patch is on usually on the outer lips (labia) of vagina or on the penis or scrotum of men?
  • Patch can spread to back of anus?
  • Itchy skin?
  • Painful skin?
  • If scraped and/or rubbed and/or friction  patch bleed easily?
