It is the inflammation of the fatty tissues within the bone and can occur on any bone i.e. osteomyelitis pubis – Inflammation of the fibrocartilaginous pubic symphysis joint (in middle of hips)
Diagnosis Tests
MRI (show presence of fluid and extensive soft-tissue reaction)
Radiologically guided needle aspiration and culture
Cause
In neonates (babies)
Bacteria: Streptococci type B, E.coli
Children
Bacteria: Stapphylococcus auerus, Streptococci type A, Haemophillia influenza type B, Mycobacterium ulcerans bacteria causing buruli ulcer
Adults
Bacteria:
Stapphylococcus auerus
Other isolated cases include: Streptococcus viridans, Staphylococcus epidermidis, and Salmonella species.
Pseudomonas aeruginosa (mainly in illicit drug users)
