What is it?

A rare condition when muscles that control the movement of the eye becomes inflamed (hot red and swollen).

  • It occurs mostly in young to middle-aged adults, affecting more women than men.

Cause

  • Unknown
  • An autoimmune disease occurs when your body’s disease-fighting cells, called antibodies, attack your healthy cells in this case you blood vessels and muscles.

Symptoms

  • Bulging eyes?
  • Eye(s)/eyelid muscles drooping causing blurred or double vision any visual problems
    colour blindness, difficulty focusing and/or pain behind eye (One or both eyes can be affected)?
  • Eyes that seem ‘stuck’?
  • Red eyes?
  • Swelling around the eyes?
  • Eye pain that worsens with eye movement?

This condition can lead to:

  • Difficulty swallowing. If the muscles in your oesophagus are affected, you may have problems swallowing (dysphagia), which in turn may cause weight loss and malnutrition.
  • Aspirated pneumonia
  • Breathing problems
  • Calcium deposits
