What is it?
Examples include:
- Heartburn:
- Lower Esophageal Sphincter (LES) Dysfunction- If the lower esophageal sphincter is weak or loses tone, the LES will not close completely after food passes into the stomach. Stomach acid can then back up into the esophagus. Certain foods and beverages, alcohol, drugs, and nervous system factors can weaken LES and impair its function
- Lack of acid and gastric motility (food sits longer in the stomach and puts pressure on LES and then cause heartburn)
- Gastro-oesophageal reflux disease (GERD) – long term Heartburn (which then can lead to: pneumonitis – asthma symptoms and /or cracking sound in lungs and/or tiredness and/or finger clubbing)
- Hiccups
- Indigestion (long term, leaving a bad taste in mouth)
- Oesophageal lumps (not cancerous)
- Oesophageal Strictures
- Oesophageal structure is deformed
- Scleroderma (Crest syndrome)
- Acrocephalopolysyndactyly disorders (Apert syndrome, Pfeiffer syndrome, Chotzen syndrome, Carpenter syndrome)
- Achalasia
- Esophageal Spasms- These are irregular contractions of the muscles in your esophagus, which is the tube that carries your food from your mouth down to your stomach. It’s not clear why these irregular contractions occur, although, in some people, food that’s too hot or too cold can trigger them.
- Oesophogitis (hot, red and swollen oesophagus) i.e. Eosinophilic esophagitis
- Hernia
- Hirschsprung’s Disease
- KAT6B-related disorders
- Kaposi’s sarcoma
- Pyloric stenosis
- Peptic ulcer
- Recurrent respiratory papillomatosis
- Stress
- Panic attack
- Vocal disorders
- USP7-related diseases
