Necrotising Fasciitis

What is it?

A serious bacterial condition of the tissue covering the muscle and can cause blood clotting in the blood vessels and causing that part of body to starve from a blood supply.

It can occur to anyone and particularly people who have a weak immune system are vulnerable.

Cause

Bacteria:
- Staphylococcus aureus
- Clostridia perfringes
- V. vulnificus

Injury (small cut or graze)
Insect bite
Direct contact with an infected person
Eating contaminated seafood (oysters, clams and crabs)
An open wound is exposed to warm sea water
Toxic shock syndrome
Penile disorders:
- Phimosis and Paraphimosis
- Priapism
- Penile trauma
- Penile fracture
- Fournier gangrene (rapid progression of cellulitis to necrotising fascistic of the penis -Medical Emergency)

Treatments

Surgery

Illicit drugs

Heroin overdose

Medication

Ibuprofen taken during a chickenpox infection
SGLT2 inhibitors (cause Fournier gangrene – Medical Emergency)

Symptoms

First few days:

High temperature greater than 38°C (100°F) or over and/or chills and sweats longer than 72 hours?
General discomfort (muscle weakness), uneasiness or ill feeling (malaise) and/or fatigue (tiredness)?
Abdominal pain and/or are constant violently vomiting or vomiting longer than two days (one day if a child)?
Diarrhoea?
Headache which is on and off or a constant headache longer than 24 hours?
Heart palpitations, irregular heartbeats?
Irritated, depressed, anxiety and/or panic attacks?
Pain in muscle area?

Third or fourth day:

Area starts to swell and show a purple rash?
Dark marks that later have dark fluid-filled blisters?
Severe pain?
Wound becomes darker and black?
Balance and dizziness problems?

And/or do not wait, phone for an ambulance if have or develop:

Septicemia
Severe dehydration symptoms
Area starts to swell and show a purple rash
Dark marks that later have dark fluid-filled blisters
Severe pain
Wound becomes darker and black
Balance and dizziness problems

Male:

If develop any of these conditions on the penis:

Phimosis and Paraphimosis
Priapism
Penile trauma
Penile fracture
Fournier gangrene (rapid progression of cellulitis to necrotising fascistic of the penis)

This condition may show similar symptoms to:

Mucormycosis (Medical Emergency – rare fungal condition)
Clostridial myonecrosis (Medical Emergency – bacterial condition)
