What is it?

Cancer in the mouth.

  • Mainly affects those 40 years old and over.

Cause

  • Drinking large amounts of alcohol
  • Smoking (cigars, cigarettes, cigarillos)
  • Chewing tobacco, betel nut
  • Tobacco snorted through nose
  • Diet: Eating a diet high in red meat, processed foods and fried foods
  • Eating a diet deficient in fruits and vegetables
  • Being exposed to excess sunlight (increases risk for lip cancer)
  • Weak immune system
  • Mouth disease
  • Leukoplakia – condition in which one or more white patches or spots (lesions) forms inside the mouth that cannot be brushed off.
  • Graft-versus-host disease
  • Genetic conditions i.e. Fanconi anemia
  • Dyskeratosis congenita-rare genetic form of bone marrow failure, the inability of the marrow to produce sufficient blood cells.
  • Occupational: Exposure to dust and chemicals i.e.
    • Metals (nickel, beryllium)
    • Paint manufacture and fumes
    • Wood
    • Coal
    • Oils (petrol, diesel)
    • Alcohols
  • Viral: Human papillomavirus (HPV)
