A serious infection that affects the mastoid bone (the large bone behind your ear) behind the ear.
There are two types:
Acute mastoiditis typically goes away within a month after treatment and doesn’t come back.
Chronic mastoiditis lasts a month or longer or comes back after antibiotic treatment.

It’s more common in children and should be diagnosed and treated quickly, the patient need to see a Medical Doctor on the same day, if not possible go to hospital.
Swelling behind the ear due to the ear bone (mastoid bone) behind the ear that can cause it to stick out or to move forward (ear looks as if it’s being pushed down and to the side)?
Redness, tenderness (may hurt when someone touches the area behind the ear) and pain behind the ear?
Ear discharge (pus or thick like fluid)?
High temperature greater than 38°C (100°F) or over and/or chills and sweats?
Headache which is on and off or a constant headache longer than 24 hours?
Hearing loss in the affected ear?
General discomfort (muscle weakness), uneasiness or ill feeling (malaise) and/or fatigue (tiredness)?
Person is Irritable and/or fussiness complaining of affected ear?
