Lichen Planus

What is it?

An unknown inflammatory non-infectious rash skin disease which commonly causes an itchy rash of small purplish lumps/bumps with a shiny flat top.

  • The most common locations for lichen planus include:
    • Scalp
    • Inside the mouth
    • Neck
    • Trunk
    • Forearms
    • Fingernails
    • Inner wrists
    • Genitals
    • Inner ankles
    • Lower legs
    • Toenails

This initial eruption may persist for weeks to months, and recurrences can continue throughout the individual’s lifetime.

  • Maybe an autoimmune condition where the immune system attacks the skin

Medication

Symptoms

  • Skin is usually itchy?
  • Rash is made up of shiny, 3-5 mm, slightly raised purple-red spots?
  • Flat plain warts?
  • Irregular white streaks that lie on the flat surface of some of them (Wickham’s striae)?
  • Thickened lichen planus, which tends to affect the shins?
  • Ring-shaped (‘annular’) lichen planus, which usually comes up in the creases such as the armpits?
  • In the inner cheek: white, net-like patches?
  • Mouth ulcers?
  • Purple-coloured or white ring-shaped patches/ sores in genitals?

Female:

  • Red, raw skin and blisters/ulcers on vagina, causing burning and soreness, very little discharge?
