Kartagener’s Syndrome

What is it?

In our airways one has tiny little hairs called cilia which help to remove foreign particles and bacteria, viruses out from our lungs, nose and ears).

  • This syndrome occurs if the cilia are not functioning properly or is abnormal and is part of a condition (sub-type) called primary ciliary dyskinesia.
  • Primary ciliary dyskinesia covers a wide range of disease on why cilia are not functioning properly though the symptoms are very similar.

Cause

  • Genetic disorder (family history)

Symptoms

  • Runny nose longer than three weeks, congestion, cold not cleared by over the counter medication?
  • Sinus headache due to congestion?
  • Regular ear infections and pain?
  • Short of breath or breathing difficulties?
  • Tight chest?
  • Regular and reoccurring chest infections?
  • Dry cough longer than three weeks?
  • Have initially a persistent dry cough which has now become a chesty cough with yellow/green and/or blood stained phlegm?
  • Fingers becoming more curved or ends becoming larger (finger clubbing)?

  • Having organs on the opposite side of the body. For example, instead of the spleen being on the left side of the body, it is on the right side of the body.
