Nail Injury

What is it?

  • Bruising
  • Bleeding under the nail (subungual hematoma, which is blood trapped beneath the  nail)
  • Hit against something
  • Heavy object hit the nail
  • Long term friction from rubbing against the shoe (due to running or lots of walking)
  • Nail biting

Symptoms

  • Nail has a red, black, or purple discoloration and covering a large part of nail?
  • Black nail?
  • Nail is painful?
  • Nail becomes loose?
  • As nail grows (can take several months) blood under the nail disappears?

When to see your medical Doctor?

  • If a blunt object or an injury has occurred to the nail and one feels they have a bleed under the nail (‘black nail’), please see your medical doctor with in 48 hours to allow them to assess whether the medical doctor will need to release pressure of the blood underneath the nail and/or check for a nail fracture.
  • If an injury is not assessed and/or treated , the damage may have occurred to the nail matrix  and it may cause one’s nail to grow incorrectly or not at all.
