What is it?

Rare inherited skin condition, in which red scaly areas or small blisters appear at areas of friction and where the skin folds.

  • It is not an allergy or contagious.

Cause

  • Family history
  • Genetic disorder: change (variant or mutation) in the ATP2C1 gene. This gene creates a protein essential for the proper health of skin (this gene helps the outer layers of the skin stick together).
  • Areas of friction and rubbing
  • Where the skin folds
  • Hot and warm climates

Symptoms

  • Red scaly areas or small blisters appear at sites of friction?
  • Worse with sweating and friction, as well as in hot weather?
  • Burning skin?
  • Itchy skin?
  • Runs in family?

This condition can lead to:

  • Bacterial skin infections
  • Viral skin infections (eczema herpeticum, caused by herpes virus):
    • Areas of painful eczema that quickly get worse
    • Groups of fluid-filled blisters that break open and leave small, shallow open sores on the skin
    • High temperature and generally feeling unwell
