Glanders

What is it?

A rare serious bacterial disease caught from infected horses and cattle.

  • The bacteria will enter via broken skin and via eyes, nose and mouth surfaces.
  • People who work with animals and who have a weak immune system are particularly vulnerable.

It occurs mainly in world regions of:

  • Africa
  • Central America
  • India
  • Middle East
  • North Australia
  • South America
  • South pacific
  • Southeast Asia

Cause

  • Bacteria: Burkholderia
  • Working or exposure to or with animals

Symptoms

  • Small bump at site of entry which may open up?
  • Red streaking rash (lymphangitis) and widespread blood filled blisters?
  • Bumpy swollen rash in armpits?
  • High temperature greater than 38°C (100°F) or over and/or chills and sweats longer than 72 hours?
  • Headache which is on and off or a constant headache longer than 24 hours?
  • Aching, painful muscles, muscle cramps/spasms/stiffness?
  • Runny nose, congestion, cold not cleared by over the counter medication or greater than three weeks?
  • Initially a persistent dry cough which has now become a chesty cough with yellow/green and/or blood stained phlegm?
  • Dry cough longer than three weeks or breathing difficulties?
  • Balance and dizziness problems?
