Gingivostomatitis

What is it?

Gingivostomatitis is a painful oral infection that can cause blisters on the lips and mouth ulcers in the mouth.

  • Mouth ulcers caused by gingivostomatitis heal in about two to three weeks.
  • It is also known as:
    • Acute herpetic gingivostomatitis
    • Herpetic gingivostomatitis
    • Primary gingivostomatitis.
    A person with gingivostomatitis is contagious for about seven days after the mouth sores appear. Before having close contact with anyone else, you should be fever-free for at least 24 hours.
    Avoid close personal contact with people who are infected,this includes kissing or sharing eating utensils.

Cause

  • Poor oral hygiene (it’s often due to poor hygiene, such as not brushing and flossing enough)
  • Bacterial:
    • Streptococcus
    • Actinomyces (Surgery or trauma to the mouth)
  • Viral:

Symptoms

  • Painful sores or ulcers on the lips, gums or inner cheeks?
  • High temperature greater than 38°C (100°F) or over and/or chills and sweats longer than 72 hours?
  • Headache which is ‘on and off’ longer than a week or a constant headache longer than 24 hours?
  • Red, swollen or tender gums?
  • Swollen lymph nodes in the neck?
  • Bad breath (halitosis)?
  • Dry mouth (xerostomia)?
  • Loss of appetite due to mouth pain?
