Fox-Fordyce disease

What is it?

Rare skin disorder affecting the apocrine sweat glands by blocking these sweat glands and tends to occur in warm and humid environments.

  • These glands are found in the following locations:
    • Eyelids
    • Armpits
    • Breasts (around nipple area)
    • Belly button
    • Genital regions
  • This condition can persist for years and usually affects females more than males mainly in ages of between 13 and 35 years.
Avoid using greasy creams as it may block the sweat glands further and make condition more irritated. Hormonal medication may help, please speak to your healthcare professional.

Cause

  • Unknown maybe:
  • Excessive heat or humidity
  • Friction of the skin
  • Stress

Symptoms

  • Dome-shaped flesh coloured skin to reddish and/or yellowish small papules affecting ones hair follicles?
  • Dark thick dry skin?
  • Lack of sweat in the area?
  • Itchy bumps on hair follicles?
  • Hair loss in affected area?
  • Intense itching that can affect one’s daily routine and sleep?
