What is it?

A fungal spots condition common in teens and adults that mainly affects the top part of the body.

  • This condition may be associated with Tinea barbae (ringworm of the beard) , where one may have:
    • Hair breaks off and/or patches of hair loss on the beard
    • Dry flaky skin
    • Crusty skin

Cause

  • Malassezia yeast:
    • The yeast tends to overgrow in hot, humid, sweaty environments.
    • Sweating is encouraged by wearing occlusive clothing.
    • Sunscreens and greasy emollients may occlude the follicles.

Host factors

Medications i.e.

  • Broad spectrum oral antibiotics (often prescribed for acne), which suppress skin bacteria allowing yeasts to proliferate.
  • Corticosteroids
  • Hormonal:
    • Oral contraceptive pill
    • HRT
    • Oestrogen supplements
