What is it?

Skin condition in which the back of the neck develops inflamed bumps.

  • Mainly in black people of Afro-Caribbean males descendants with black curly hair
  • Rarely in men of Latino or Asian descent
  • Rare in females.

Cause

  • Unknown
  • May be due to:

Symptoms

  • Itchy round small bumps appear within or close to the hair-bearing area of the back of the neck?
  • Small bumps become fluid-filled (pustules), with scratching can lead to bacterial infection?
  • Bumps become small scars?
  • Scars are hairless and can form a band along the hairline?
  • Scars can lead to keloids?

General tips

Tips to avoid the condition to become more irritated or worst:

  • Wash the area gently ( do not scrub) with non-irritating cleansers.
  • Avoid closely shaving the back of your neck.
  • Avoid head wear (such as sports helmets) and shirt collars that rub against the back of your neck.
  • Patients can self-manage with the use of topical antiseptics, such as chlorhexidine, povidone-iodine or triclosan, which can be used for seven to ten days.
