Fluoride Toxicity

What is it?

When one has too much fluoride in their teeth (Fluorosis).

Symptoms

In teeth:

  • Very fine pearly white lines or flecking on the surface of the teeth?
  • White spots on teeth?
  • Black spots on teeth?
  • White streaks on teeth?
  • Discoloured teeth?
  • Mottled teeth?
  • Pitted teeth?
  • Chalky white irregular patches (stained and yellow-pitted) on teeth?
  • Severe fluorosis can cause the tooth’s enamel to become pitted or discoloured?

General symptoms:

  • Nausea and sickness feeling?
  • Abdominal pain and/or are constant violently vomiting or vomiting longer than two days (one day if a child)?
  • Diarrhoea?
  • Muscle spasms (very high doses)
  • Seizures (very high doses)

Complications /Information to beware of/General tips:

Please make sure one has the right amount of fluoride unless one’s dentist says otherwise

  • Children under 3 years old should brush twice daily, with a smear of toothpaste containing at least 1,000 ppm fluoride.
  • Children between 3 and 6 years old should brush at least twice daily with a pea-sized amount of toothpaste containing more than 1,000 ppm fluoride.
  • Adults should brush at least twice daily with a toothpaste containing 1,350-1,500 ppm fluoride.
  • Don’t use mouthwash at the same time as brushing. Use it at an alternative time, because it washes away the fluoride in the toothpaste
