Erythromelalgia

What is it?

It is episodes of burning pain and redness in the hands and feet, and sometimes the arms, legs, ears and face.

  • The pain can be severe enough to make walking, standing, socialising, exercising, sleeping difficult and can have a significant impact on work or school life.
  • This condition can be referred as Mitchell’s Disease, and/or Acromelalgia.

There are two types:

Primary Erythromelalgia

  • The cause is unknown and may run in families and occurs at a young age.

Secondary Erythromelalgia

  • This occurs due to an underlying illness and normally occurs at ages of 60- 60 years old.

Cause

Primary Erythromelalgia:

  • Unknown
  • Family history
  • Maybe problem with nerves from the brain to blood vessels in the affected area.
  • Abnormally high levels of blood cells

Secondary Erythromelalgia:

Triggers include:

  • Exercising
  • Wearing warm socks, gloves
  • Tight shoes
  • Entering a warm room
  • Dehydrated
  • Alcohol
  • Spicy food

Symptoms

  • Itching sensation?
  • Worsens to a severe hot ,burning pain and tender, mottled red and/or blue skin?
  • Flare-ups of severe pain lasting from a few minutes to days?
  • Hands and feet are most commonly affected, usually on both sides of the body?
  • Rare: Ears and Face affected?
