Enthesisitis

What is it?

It is painful inflammation (hot, red and swelling) of the entheses: where a bone is joined to a tendon (connects muscles to bones) or a ligament (tissue that connect bone to bone).

Common areas (though can occur anywhere on body where tendons and ligaments are present):

  • At the top Shins (on lower leg)
  • Behind and/or under the heel
  • Ends of ribs
  • Achilles region
  • Spinal region
  • Lower and back part of hip
  • Bone area in groin region
  • Fingers and toes
  • Shoulder pain and difficulty in moving shoulder
  • One has difficulty in walking
  • Early morning joint stiffness
  • Early morning muscle and bone pain

Cause

  • Stomach and bowel Infection i.e. food poisoning causing bone and muscle pain caused by bacteria
  • Tenosynovitis -sheath of tissue around tendons becomes inflamed due to sports injury or repetitive muscle strain, (when using same muscles again and again) and normally occurs at same time as tendonitis)
  • Tendonitis (inflammation of tendons)
  • Psoriatic arthritis (Psoriasis and arthritis)
  • Rheumatoid arthritis
  • Plantar fasciitis
  • Reactive arthritis (up to 70% affected)
  • Ankylosing spondylitis
  • Unknown maybe an auto immune disease where the body’s defence system attacks its own body in this case the tendons and ligaments
    • E.coli
    • Shigella
    • Yersinia
    • Salmonella
    • Campylbacter
  • Prolonged sitting on hard surfaces

Symptoms

  • High temperature greater than 38°C (100°F) or over and/or chills and sweats longer than 72hours?
  • Aching, painful muscles, muscle cramps/spasms/stiffness?
  • Joint stiffness and pain?
  • General discomfort (muscle weakness), uneasiness or ill feeling (malaise) and/or fatigue (tiredness)?
  • Weight loss?
