Endometritis

What is it?

An inflammatory condition of the lining of the uterus and is usually due to an infection.

Cause

  • Surgery or examination in vaginal or cervix area(i.e. vaginal scrapping, inserting an Intrauterine device)

Syndromes

Symptoms

  • High temperature greater than 38°C (100°F) or over and/or chills and sweats longer than 72 hours?
  • Abdominal pain and/or are constant violently vomiting or vomiting longer than two days / one day (if child)?
  • Constipation?
  • Abnormal vaginal bleeding?
  • Abnormal vaginal discharge?
  • Rectal bleeding and/or pain?

This condition can lead to:

  • Infertility

General tips

  • Practise safer sex.
  • No sex until antibiotic treatment is completed and your usual sexual partner has completed treatment.
  • A follow-up test must be done to make sure that treatment has cleared the infection.
  • All sexual partners need to be contacted, tested and, if indicated, treated. Even if partners have no symptoms they may be able to transmit infection to other sexual partners.
  • Testing to exclude other sexually transmitted infections is advisable.
