What is it?

Severe swelling of the colon.

Cause

Medication

  • Anti-diarrheal i.e. loperamide (Imodium)

Symptoms

  • Abdominal pain and/or are constant violently vomiting or vomiting longer than two days (one day if a child)?
  • Severe abdominal swelling?
  • Stomach is tender to touch?
  • High temperature greater than 38°C (100°F) or over and/or chills and sweats longer than 72 hours?
  • A rapid heart rate?

Medical Emergency Condition

And/or do not wait, phone for an ambulance if have or develop:

  • Septicaemia
  • Peritonitis
  • Hugh or increase in swelling over liver/or spleen area
  • Hugh or increase in swelling over stomach area (not due to have eaten food or wind)
  • Severe abdominal pain
  • Balance and dizziness (not always)
  • Nausea and vomiting (not always)
  • Bleeding through any orifice (not always)
