Corneal Erosion Syndrome

What is it?

Corneal Erosion syndrome is a condition that occurs when the cornea’s (white part of eye) outermost layer of cells do not attach to the underneath wall of the eye. This is mainly because the clear part of the front of your eye is damaged.

The eye will repair itself but it can take at least eight to twelve weeks to regenerate or repair providing it is not exposed to the cause. In the meantime the symptoms or a red sore painful eye occurs because the eye’s nerves are exposed.

Cause

  • Injury to the front of the eye
  • Rubbing your eyes
  • Contact lens wearers
  • Chemical burns to eye
  • Anything foreign entering the eye
  • Make up sticks
  • Dry eyes
  • Diabetic retinopathy
  • Corneal dystrophy
  • Dehydration
  • Dry or smoky atmospheres
  • Watching television or using computer or screens for periods of a long time

Syndromes

Symptoms:

(Three days to several months later after injury)

  • Sore prickly eye first thing at morning or towards end of sleep?
  • Difficulty opening one’s eyelids?
  • Sensitive to light?
  • Symptoms get better when eyes are open but starts again towards end of sleep?
