What is it?

Cogan’s syndrome is a rare, rheumatic disease involving that can cause long term  inflammation (hot, red and swelling) of the blood vessels of  ears and eyes.

  • It most commonly occurs in a person’s 20s or 30s.

Symptoms

  • Ear pain?
  • Ear joints which are hot, red and swollen (inflamed)?
  • Sensitivity to every day noise and/or ringing noise within and/or difficulty hearing?
  • Becoming deaf?
  • Red, painful, light-sensitive eyes or blurred vision?
  • Eye look inflamed, hot, red, and swollen and/or eyes itchy, soreness, burning and feeling uncomfortable?
  • ‘White ring’ in the eye (interstitial keratitis)?
  • Balance and dizziness?
  • Sickness or nausea feeling?
  • Abdominal pain and/or are constant violently vomiting or vomiting longer than two days (one day if a child)?
  • High temperature greater than 38°C (100°F) or over and/or chills and sweats longer than 72 hours?
  • General discomfort (muscle weakness), uneasiness or ill feeling (malaise) and/or fatigue (tiredness)?
  • Unexplained weight loss?
  • Swollen lymph glands and/or reoccurring mouth ulcers?
  • Rash?
  • Chest pain?
  • Constant pain and/or sharp or electric shock-like in neck, shoulder pain, tingling and numbing occurs along the whole arm down?
  • Shortness of breath or breathing difficulties?
