What is it?

It is any type of persistent tailbone pain.

  • The tailbone, located at the very bottom of the spine, is medically known as the coccyx.
  • Coccydynia is typically felt as a localized pain that usually worsens when sitting or with any activity that puts pressure on the bottom of the spine.

Cause

  • Unknown cause
  • Direct trauma to the tailbone
  • Hypermobility, or too much movement
  • Limited mobility
  • Sacrococcygeal joint may become dislocated at the front or back of the tailbone
  • Repetitive stress i.e. horseback riding and sitting on hard surfaces for long periods of time.
  • Childbirth
  • Tumour in local area
  • Infection of local area – Osteomyelitis
  • Pain from other areas of spine

Symptoms

  • Aching soreness pain in the tailbone (Buttock and/or bottom pain)?
  • Tightness or general discomfort around the tailbone may be constant?
  • Bottom pain may come and go with movement or pressure?
  • Increased bottom pain with sitting especially on hard surfaces or leaning back against a wall?
  • Bottom pain that is worse when moving from sitting to standing and vice versa?
  • Bottom pain that may increase with bowel movement or sexual intercourse?
