Burning Mouth Syndrome

What is it?

It the long term or recurrent burning in the mouth without an obvious cause.

It can appear suddenly, but it can develop gradually over time.

Cause

Female (more common)
Premenopausal
Menopause
Oral conditions i.e.
- Dry mouth (xerostomia) or medication and/or condition causing this dry mouth
- Oral thrush
- Lichen planus
- Allergy including skin allergies and/or allergic to dental products including toothpastes
- Pemphigus vulgaris – rare autoimmune disease that causes painful blistering on the skin and mucous membranes
- Geographic tongue (that gives the tongue a map – like appearance)
- Oral habits, such as tongue thrusting, biting the tip of the tongue
- Bruxism
- Reflux of stomach acid (Gastro- oesophageal reflux disease (GERD) – long term Heartburn (which then can lead to: pneumonitis – asthma symptoms and /or cracking sound in lungs and/or tiredness and/or finger clubbing) that enters your mouth from your stomach
- Allergies or reactions to foods, food flavourings, other food additives, fragrances, dyes or dental-work substances

Symptoms

Tingling/scalding sensation and/or discomfort may affect the tongue, gums, lips, inside of your cheeks, roof of your mouth (palate) or widespread areas of your whole mouth?
Common areas include front of the tongue, roof of the mouth, or inside the lower lip initially (worst at the afternoon and evening)?
Wiggling and/or twisting and/or tingling sensation to lips, tongue?
Sensation of dry mouth?
Increased thirst?
Bitter or metallic taste and/or change taste in mouth?
Wake up with a dry throat?
Occurs every day, with little discomfort when you wake, but become worse as the day progresses and/or Start as soon as you wake up and last all day and/or Come and go?
