Barotitis Media

What is it?

It is damage to the middle ear (area behind your eardrum) from pressure change.

Cause

  • The eustachian tube (the ear hole tube in the ear) becomes blocked and air builds up inside the middle ear causing injury to ear and blood vessels and swelling.
  • History of barotitis media
  • Being in an aircraft that goes down too fast
  • Changing depth too fast while scuba diving
  • Falling fast while skydiving

Treatments

  • Hyperbaric oxygen treatment
