Barlow Syndrome

What is it?

Mitral valves in the heart don’t work properly, causing blood to leak back in the heart rather than pump forward.

Most people with mitral valve prolapse do not have any symptoms, and the condition is discovered only when a doctor hears a certain clicking sound with or without a heart murmur during a routine physical examination.

Cause

  • Unknown
  • Family history
  • Inherited abnormality in the way the body produces collagen (connective tissue)
  • Rheumatic heart disease (can be caused from rheumatic fever)

Symptoms

  • Irregular heartbeat (arrhythmia)?
  • Balance and dizziness?
  • General discomfort (muscle weakness), uneasiness or ill feeling (malaise) and/or fatigue (tiredness)?
  • Chest pain and/or breathing difficulties?
