Banti Syndrome

What is it?

It is when one has a swollen spleen causing the destruction of red blood cells causing anaemia, stomach irritation and regular infections.

  • Banti syndrome is a rare condition causing a large spleen.

Cause

  • Blockage or obstruction of the blood flow causing an increase of blood pressure in the veins of the liver or spleen
  • Blood clots in veins of the liver or spleen.
  • Injury in vein of the liver and spleen
  • Abnormalities in the veins of the liver and spleen

Symptoms

  • Diagnosed Anaemic (i.e. lack of oxygen in blood, due to lack of iron, folic acid or heavy blood loss)?
  • Abdominal pain and/or are constant violently vomiting or vomiting longer than two days (one day if a child)?
  • Unexplained weight loss?
  • Long term persistent indigestion, frequent heartburn or constant abdominal pain?
  • Feeling discomfort, fullness, or pain on the upper left side of the abdomen; this pain may spread to your left shoulder?
  • General discomfort (muscle weakness), uneasiness or ill feeling (malaise) and/or fatigue (tiredness)?
  • Feel full quickly when eating trapped wind and burping  (‘foul rotten egg smell’)?
  • Stomach lumps (Swelling over spleen area)?
