What is it?

A non – cancerous round and/or oval and/or irregular patches.

Cause

  • Unknown

May be due to:

  • Genetic susceptibility
  • Toxic effects of chemicals such as ammonium nitrate or barium sulphate
  • Viral infections
  • Whipworm infestation

Medication

  • Amiodarone (heart)
  • Chlorpromazine (antipsychotic)
  • Thiazides (diuretics)
  • Tetracyclines (antibiotics)

Symptoms

  • Round and/or oval and/or irregular patches that are raised and red in colour with a strong border initially?
  • Then turn grey in colour?

This condition can lead to:

  • Difficulty swallowing. If the muscles in your esophagus are affected, you may have problems swallowing (dysphagia), which in turn may cause weight loss and malnutrition.
  • Aspirated pneumonia
  • Breathing problems
  • Calcium deposits
