What is it?

Air conditioning does have some benefits:


Air conditioning have some disadvantages too:

  • Air conditioners suck moisture out of a room to bring down the humidity and cool it off and hence it dry out your body from your scalp to eyes, nose, mouth, throat , chest and skin.
  • It also circulates dust , chemicals , bacteria and virus causing us more exposure to them

General

  • Tiredness and dizziness and sickness feeling
    • ‘Sick building syndrome’ – If socialising/working in air-conditioned building with poor ventilation
  • By having the air conditioner at cooler temperatures constantly, one can become used to this temperature. This means that when you need to do something outside in the real air temperature your body can become very stressed
  • One may also find that your body struggles with the adjustment from cold to hot then back to cold environments.
  • Poor sleep

Hair

  • Hair loss – extreme temperature change can damage the hair.

  • Headaches – the brain can temporarily contract or shrink as a consequence, triggering a pain response in the membrane surrounding the brain and/or ‘Sick building syndrome’ – If socialising/working in air-conditioned building with poor ventilation

  • Moisturise your skin regularly (four to six times daily)
  • Use moisturising eye drops
  • If one has a respiratory condition keep their medication nearby i.e. inhalers.
