Binge Eating Disorder

What is it?

A serious eating disorder in which one constantly eats unusually large amounts of food and feels they are unable to stop. and then may feel often upset or guilty.

  • Binges are often planned in advance and the person may buy “special” binge foods.
  • Men and women of any age can get binge eating disorder, but it typically starts in the late teens or early 20s.
Unlike a person with bulimia, after a binge, you don’t regularly compensate for extra calories eaten by vomiting, using laxatives or exercising excessively.

Cause

  • Family history – If other blood relative also has a eating binge disorder
  • Dieting – Persons with binge-eating disorder have a history of dieting (Dieting or restricting calories during the day may trigger an urge to binge eat)
  • High alcohol intake
  • Anxiety – low self-esteem, an obsessive personality or are a perfectionist
  • Stress
  • Depression
  • Bipolar mood disorder
  • Concerned about being slim i.e. ballet dancers, jockeys, models or athletes
  • Psychological issues (persons who have a binge-eating disorder feel negatively about themselves and their skills and accomplishments)
    • Availability of cheap junk food
    • Poor self image
    • Sexually abused

Treatment with dopamine agonists has a well-established association with impulse control disorders, including pathological gambling, binge eating, and hypersexuality.

  • Levodopa (Parcopa, Rytary, Sinemet, Sinemet CR)
  • Pramipexole (Mirapex)
  • Ropinirole (Requip)
  • Rotigotine (Neupro)

  • Feel such an urge to eat that you can’t resist the urges and continue binge eating
  • Eating even when you’re full or not hungry?
  • Eating rapidly during binge episodes?
  • Eating until you’re uncomfortably full?
  • Frequently eating alone or in secret?
  • Feeling depressed, disgusted, ashamed, guilty or upset about your eating?
  • Frequently dieting, possibly without weight loss?
