Hydronephrosis

What is it?

When the kidneys become stretched and swollen as the result of there is a build-up of urine inside them causing urine to back up into one or both of the kidneys.

  • This is normally due to an obstruction and/or a blockage to the flow of urine from the kidney to the bladder.

(Symptoms develop quickly over a few hours or gradually over weeks or months)

  • High fever?
  • Fatigue/tiredness?
  • Nausea and Vomiting?
  • Flank pain (pain around the sides of hips and lower back)?
  • Urinating less often than you used to or with a weak stream?
  • Burning and/or pain during urination?
  • Blood in the urine?
  • A persistent urge to urinate and/or changes in urinary frequency?
  • Inability to void the bladder completely, prone to abdominal infection?
  • Incontinence?
