Hydronephrosis

What is it?

When the kidneys become stretched and swollen as the result of there is a build-up of urine inside them causing urine to back up into one or both of the kidneys.

This is normally due to an obstruction and/or a blockage to the flow of urine from the kidney to the bladder.

Cause

Pregnancy
Increase in the amount of urine your baby produces in the later stages of pregnancy causing blockage in the flow of urine from the kidney(s) to the bladder ·
Backflow of urine from the bladder to the kidney(s), or a blockage in the flow of urine out of the bladder.
Diabetes
Neurological disease
Blood clot
Ovarian cysts
Retroperitoneal fibrosis
Vaginal prolapse
Kidney stones
Enlarged prostate in males
Narrowing of the ureters (the tubes that carry urine from the kidneys to the bladder) because of injury, infection or surgery
Sacrococcygeal teratomas
Epidermolysis Bullosa

Symptoms

(Symptoms develop quickly over a few hours or gradually over weeks or months)

High fever?
Fatigue/tiredness?
Nausea and Vomiting?
Flank pain (pain around the sides of hips and lower back)?
Urinating less often than you used to or with a weak stream?
Burning and/or pain during urination?
Blood in the urine?
A persistent urge to urinate and/or changes in urinary frequency?
Inability to void the bladder completely, prone to abdominal infection?
Incontinence?
