Sweet Syndrome

What is it?

(Acute febrile neutrophilic dermatosis)

An uncommon skin disorder that affects the head, face, neck, arms and back that most commonly affects women aged 30-60 years.

  • It is a reactive condition with a number of potential triggers i.e. Weak immune system
  • It is not contagious and cannot be transferred from one person to another.
  • When limited to the skin, is a benign condition that usually resolves in 5-12 weeks; however, it recurs in almost 30% of patients and can recur more commonly in patients with blood cancers.

  • Fever?
  • Raised red, pink or purplish tender skin lumps on the skin?
  • Papules (a papule is an area of abnormal skin tissue that is less than 1 centimeter around)?
  • Bumps grow quickly in size, spreading into painful clusters up to an inch (2.5 centimetres) or so in diameter?
  • Nodules?
  • Plaques?
  • General discomfort (muscle weakness), uneasiness or ill feeling (malaise) and/or fatigue (tiredness)?
  • Aching joints and muscles?
  • Swollen lymph glands (lumps on side of neck, armpits, and groin) and/or reoccurring mouth ulcers?
  • Sore eyes (conjunctivitis)?
