Darier’s Disease

What is it?

Rare inherited skin condition, in where the skin in certain areas develops large numbers of small brownish warty bumps, where the walls of the skin are not formed properly.

  • It is not an allergy or contagious.
  • The skin condition first appears between ages of 6 years old and 20 years old.

Cause

  • Family history
  • Walls of the skin not formed properly.

Symptoms

  • Little brownish, rough-topped bumps develop on the skin?
  • Skin may become scaly or lumpy or even form blisters?
  • Itchy skin?
  • Skin may smell unpleasant, particularly in moist areas?
  • Spots inside the mouth and give the roof of the mouth a rough feeling?
  • Pits or small areas of hard skin occur on the palms of the hands, less often the soles of the feet?
  • The sun causes the disease to flare up?
  • Females notice that it worsens around the time of their periods?
  • Runs in family?

This condition can lead to:

  • Skin cancer (Bowen type- disease)
  • Bacterial skin infections
  • Viral skin infectionsn (eczema herpeticum, caused by herpes virus):
    • Areas of painful eczema that quickly get worse
    • Groups of fluid-filled blisters that break open and leave small, shallow open sores on the skin
    • High temperature and generally feeling unwell
