What is it?

A psoriasis condition where the body immune defence system attacks our own body (the skin).

It affects mainly people between 40 and 60 years of age.
Females tend to have this condition more than males.

Cause

Unknown

Although it is thought that factors such as:

Family history
Stress
Smoking
High consumption of alcohol
Persons living in cold temperature regions
History of other types of psoriasis
Weak immune conditions:
Hormonal changes i.e.
- Pregnancy
- Puberty
Overweight
Skin injury i.e.
- Cuts, scrapes and burns
- Sunburn
Viral or bacterial Infections i.e.

Medication:

Bi-polar disease- Lithium
High blood pressure, migraines hyperthyroidism and anxiety – B-blockers
High blood pressure:
- ACE inhibitors
- quinidine
Anti-malarial- Chloroquine and hydroxychloroquine
Non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs) – Indomethacin
Corticosteroids
Imiquimod
Interferon
Terbinafine

Symptoms

Rash (pustules) symptoms on palms of hands or feet and turn in to brown and scaly spots?
Skin is cracked?
Blister and sores on skin?
Itchy skin?
Scaly skin?
Dry and thick skin?
Difficulty walking and/or doing daily tasks?
Pain that affects activities and sleep?

General tips

Avoid smoking or talk to your Medical doctor and/or pharmacist regarding stop smoking plans/programmes.
Try not to use soaps , bubble baths and perfumed shower gels, use simple moisturizing and cleansing products instead.
Use moisturising creams liberally and regularly on your plans and soles of feet and/or urea creams to remove dead and thickening skin.
Rest ones hands and feet.
Avoid clothing that irritate the skin.
Protect your hands with hypoallergenic gloves/cotton gloves while doing manual work.
Wear cotton socks and well fitted shoes.
