What is it?

Non-cancerous tumours that grow in or around the womb and are common in one in four women developing it in some stage of their life occurring more regularly in afro-Caribbean women.

  • Occur mainly between ages of 16 to 50 years old.

Symptoms

(Symptoms can vary from mild to severe, while others have no symptoms at all)

  • Abdominal pain and/or are constant violently vomiting or vomiting longer than two days (one day if a child)?
  • Pain and discomfort during sexual intercourse (fibroid near vagina area)?
  • Pain in legs and back?
  • General discomfort (muscle weakness), uneasiness or ill feeling (malaise) and/or fatigue (tiredness)?
  • Heavy and/or painful periods?
  • Anaemic (i.e. lack of oxygen in blood, due to lack of iron, folic acid or heavy blood loss)?
  • Increase thirst, heavy sweating and need to urinate frequently (fibroids press on bladder)?
  • Find passing stools difficult and constipated (fibroids press on bowels)?
  • Rectal bleeding?
