Babesiosis (Red Water or Cattle Tick Fever)

What is it?

A rare Infection caused from a bite of a tick carried by deer, meadow moles, mice, horses, cats and dogs.

  • Symptoms usually show up within a few weeks (one to four weeks) or at times up to nine weeks of the bite.
  • Symptoms vary greatly from case to case.
  • Persons especially vulnerable (if bitten) are those with:

Cause

  • Parasite: Babesia microti (Ixodes Tick) and/or and Babesia divergens
  • Contaminated blood transfusions

Symptoms

(symptoms can vary)

  • Dry cough longer than three weeks or breathing difficulties?
  • Headache which is on and off or a constant headache longer than 24 hours?
  • High temperature greater than 38°C (100°F) or over and/or chills and sweats longer than 72 hours?
  • General discomfort (muscle weakness), uneasiness or ill feeling (malaise) and/or fatigue (tiredness)?
  • Joint pain and stiffness?
  • Abdominal pain and/or are constant violently vomiting or vomiting longer than two days (one day if a child)?
  • Stomach lumps (Swelling over spleen area)?
  • Lump appear on left hand side of abdomen due to the spleen swelling?
  • Abdominal heaviness and/or swelling in abdomen and liver area?
