Zollinger-Ellison Syndrome

What is it?

A rare disorder caused by one or more tumours in pancreas or beginning of small intestine (duodenum).

  • The tumors, called gastrinomas, secrete large amounts of the hormone gastrin, which causes your stomach to produce too much acid and thus cause ulcers to develop [holes in the stomach ad duodenum (part of intestine) that do not to heel].
  • The tumours can be cancerous and spread to other parts of body.

Symptoms

  • Burning and/or dull pain in centre of abdomen, between belly button and rib cage particularly at night or after food?
  • Blood in faeces (like coffee grounds)?
  • Black/tarry stools (maybe smelly)?
  • Unexplained weight loss?
  • Pain and difficulty when swallowing?
  • Loss of appetite?
  • Constant abdominal pain after eating?
  • Nausea and or sickness feeling after eating?
  • Vomit or cough up blood?
  • Short of breath and/or breathing difficulties?
  • General discomfort (muscle weakness), uneasiness or ill feeling (malaise) and/or fatigue (tiredness)?
  • Rectal bleeding?
  • Diarrhoea?
