Yellow Nail Syndrome

What is it?

Nails (finger nails and/or toe nails) stops growing, turns yellow and thick found in persons with respiratory conditions.

Respiratory conditions include:

Cause

  • Unknown
  • Maybe genetic (runs in families)
  • Maybe malfunction of the lymphatic system
  • Abnormal of leakage of fluid through very tiny vessels (microvascular permeability) may also contribute to the development of lymphoedema in yellow nail syndrome.

Triggers also include:

Medication

  • Penicillamine
  • 2-mercaptopropionylglycine
  • N-acetylcysteine
  • Propythiouracil

Symptoms

  • Yellow, thickened, and excessively curved nails with almost complete stoppage of nail growth?
  • Loss of the strip of hardened skin at the base and sides of a fingernail (cuticles)?
  • Infection of the soft tissue around edge of the nails (paronychia)?
  • Separation of the nails from the nail bed (onycholysis) may cause the nails to fall out?
  • Swelling (lymphoedema) of arms and/or legs (especially)?
