Wegener’s Granulomatosis

What is it?

Wegener’s Granulomatosis (Granulomatosis with polyangiitis) is a rare condition in which the blood vessels become inflamed (hot , red and swollen) and this damages the walls of small- and medium-sized arteries and veins and affect  the normal blood supply to one’s tissues and organs.

  • It mainly affects the ears, nose, sinuses, heart , nerves kidneys and lungs.

Symptoms

  • High temperature greater than 38°C (100°F) or over and/or chills and sweats longer than 72 hours?
  • Night sweats?
  • Headache which is on and off or a constant headache longer than 24 hours?
  • General discomfort (muscle weakness), uneasiness or ill feeling (malaise) and/or fatigue (tiredness)?
  • Loss of appetite?
  • Unexplained weight loss?
  • Joint pain and stiffness?
  • Regular nosebleeds?
  • Swollen lymph glands and/or recurring mouth ulcers?
  • Earache?
  • Hearing loss?
  • Crusts around the nostrils?
  • Face pain (sinusitis)?
  • Runny nose, congestion, cold not cleared by over the counter medication or greater than three weeks?
  • High blood pressure?
  • Swollen and/or bleeding gums?
  • Hoarseness of throat?
  • Sore throat longer than seven days or more?
  • Dry cough longer than three weeks and/or breathing difficulties?
  • Have initially a persistent dry cough which has now become a chesty cough with yellow/green and/or blood stained phlegm?
  • Rash (red or purple patches)?
  • Purple spots?
  • Small blisters and/or ulcers and/or small nodules?
  • Unknown lumps  and swelling?
  • Irritated eyes and/or eye pain and redness and/or burning sensation?
  • Conjunctivitis and/or swollen eyelids?
  • Blurred/weakened vision or double vision?
  • Abdominal pain and/or are constant violently vomiting or vomiting longer than two days (one day if a child)?
  • kidney problems such as blood in urine?
  • Diarrhoea?
  • Blood in faeces?
