Toxic Shock Syndrome (Occur after an infection and/or use of tampons)

What is it?

A rare and short term condition where a bacterium releases its toxins and cause serious symptoms.


Why is this happening?

  • Our body (immune system) overreacts to anything harmful (see causes below) and this causes an increase of inflammation in our body, if this inflammation occurs in the lungs , it is called pneumonia.
  • If the immune system reacts even further , it may affect the rest of the body and this can lead to septic shock where ones blood pressure drops to dangerously low levels and organs stop working properly or fail completely.

  • Long term use of tampons, vaginal sponges and diaphragms for menstruating females (females who have periods)

Medication

Symptoms

Symptoms can vary:

  • High temperature greater than 38°C (100°F) or over and/or chills and sweats longer than 72 hours?
  • Balance and dizziness problems?
  • Low blood pressure?
  • Widespread rash?
  • Skin shedding of palms and soles of feet (one or two weeks after feeling ill)?
  • Abdominal pain and/or are constant violently vomiting or vomiting longer than two days (one day if a child)?
  • Diarrhoea?
  • Bleeding and bruising under the skin?
  • Confused, dizzy and irritated?
  • Red eyes, mouth and/or  genital skin (increased blood flow to area)?
  • Severe muscle pain?
  • General discomfort (muscle weakness), uneasiness or ill feeling (malaise) and/or fatigue (tiredness)?
