Skin Infection

What is it?

This mainly occurs on an open wound and/or can occur secondarily to any type of infection.

This condition can be mistaken for cellulitis particularly of wrists and ankles, feet and legs

Causes

Symptoms

  • Skin condition getting worse i.e. more inflamed (hot, red and swollen) for more than 3 days with or without medication?
  • Any unknown lumps or swellings on any part of body?
  • Skin broken and oozing with yellow pus?
  • Tried over the counter medication (antiseptic creams) and it has not helped?
  • Infection in a large area near body cavities i.e. mouth, anus, eyes, nails, genitals (vagina/penis/crotch), nostrils, armpit?
  • Infection  has been on any body cavities i.e. mouth, anus, eyes, nails, genitals (vagina/penis/crotch), nostrils, armpit?

This condition can lead to:

  • High temperature greater than 38°C (100°F) or over and/or chills and sweats longer than 72 hours?
  • Headache which is on and off or a constant headache longer than 24 hours?
  • Sore throat longer than seven days or more?
  • Swollen lymph glands and/or reoccurring mouth ulcers?
  • Balance and dizziness problems?
  • Initially a persistent dry cough which has now become a chesty cough with yellow/green and/or blood stained phlegm?

General tips


This condition may show similar symptoms to:

Face and lips

  • Angular stomatitis (around lips, spreads from corners to lips to face)
  • Cold sores (always on the lips membrane and/or genitals)
  • Impetigo (around lips and on face between lips and nose and lips and cheek)
  • Seborrheic dermatitis (wet skin , between folds of skin of nose and cheek)
  • Shingles (any part of face particularly nose and/or near eyes, see your medical Doctor on the same day
