Osteoporosis And Increasing Bone Density (Bisphosphonates) Medication

What is it?

This medication can cause osteonecrosis of the ear and/or jaw.

  • Osteonecrosis is a disease caused by reduced blood flow to bones in the joints. In people with healthy bones, new bone is always replacing old bone.
  • The lack of blood causes the bone to break down faster than the body can make enough new bone.
  • Please tell your medical doctor/dentist of any ear pain, ear discharge, ear infection or teeth/ jaw pain or swelling respectively.

This medication can cause atypical femoral fractures (stress fractures).

  • Please tell your medical doctor of any pain of thigh, hip and/or groin.

Examples of medications include:

  • Alendronic acid (Fosamax, Fosamax Once Weekly, Fosavance, Binosto)
  • Etidronate (Didronel, Didronel PMO)
  • Pamidronate (Aredia)
  • Ibandronic acid (Bondronat, Bonviva)
  • Risedronate sodium (Actonel, Actonel Once Weekly, Actonel Combi, Atelvia)
  • Sodium clodronate (Bonefos, Clasteon, Loron)
  • Tiludronate acid (Skelid)
  • Zoledronic acid (Aclasta, Zometa, Reclast,
