Necrotising Fasciitis

What is it?

A serious bacterial condition of the tissue covering the muscle and can cause blood clotting in the blood vessels and causing that part of body to starve from a blood supply.

  • It can occur to anyone and particularly people who have a weak immune system are vulnerable.

Cause

  • Bacteria:
    • Staphylococcus aureus
    • Clostridia perfringes
    • V. vulnificus

Symptoms

First few days:

  • High temperature greater than 38°C (100°F) or over and/or chills and sweats longer than 72 hours?
  • General discomfort (muscle weakness), uneasiness or ill feeling (malaise) and/or fatigue (tiredness)?
  • Abdominal pain and/or are constant violently vomiting or vomiting longer than two days (one day if a child)?
  • Diarrhoea?
  • Headache which is on and off or a constant headache longer than 24 hours?
  • Heart palpitations, irregular heartbeats?
  • Irritated, depressed, anxiety and/or panic attacks?
  • Pain in muscle area?

Third or fourth day:

  • Area starts to swell and show a purple rash?
  • Dark marks that later have dark fluid-filled blisters?
  • Severe pain?
  • Wound becomes darker and black?
  • Balance and dizziness problems?

Medical Emergency Condition

And/or do not wait, phone for an ambulance if have or develop:

  • Septicemia
  • Severe dehydration symptoms
  • Area starts to swell and show a purple rash
  • Dark marks that later have dark fluid-filled blisters
  • Severe pain
  • Wound becomes darker and black
  • Balance and dizziness problems
